Interproximal initial carious lesions interpreted with AI

Before
After

Patient Presentation and examination:

  • Personal information: 50-year-old male
  • Routine radiographic examination: Small radiolucencies in the enamel of #29 (mesial) and #30 (mesial) were observed. This was highlighted well by an artificial intelligence software (Videa Health AI). (Figure 1)

Diagnosis:

  • #29: Initial caries extending to the outer half of enamel (E1) on the mesial surface
  • #30: Initial caries extending to the outer half of enamel (E1) on the mesial surface

Treatment:

  • The lesions were treated each with one application of Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus in the same appointment.
  • Oral hygiene instructions were reinforced.

Follow-up: At the 4-month follow-up post treatment, the following observations were made, confirmed also by the AI software: (Figure 2)

  •  Reduction in lesion sizes to E0, indicative of complete remineralization.

Take-away: A majority of initial carious lesions are on interproximal surfaces and are asymptomatic.* Their diagnosis can be facilitated by the use of artificial intelligence on bitewing x-rays. Treating these lesions with Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus, along with improvement in oral hygiene maintenance and diet, can help remineralize these lesions and aid in the prevention of caries progression.
