Patient Presentation and examination:
- Personal information: 42-year-old female
- Routine radiographic examination: Small radiolucencies were observed in the enamel of #13 (mesial) and #19 (distal). This was confirmed using an artificial intelligence software (Videa Health AI) (Figure 1)
Diagnosis:
- #13 : Initial caries extending to the outer half of enamel (E1) on the mesial surface
- #19 : Initial caries extending to the outer half of enamel (E1) on the distal surface
Treatment:
- The initial caries lesions were treated with one application of Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus and followed up with an application of fluoride varnish (5% sodium fluoride).
- Oral hygiene instructions were reinforced.
Follow-up: At the 4-month follow-up post-treatment, the following observations were made, confirmed also with the AI software: (Figure 2)
- Reduction of the sizes of the treated lesions to E0, indicative of complete remineralization.
Take-away: When used as a confirmation for the clinician’s opinion, artificial intelligence (VideaHealth, in this case) can be a great tool to help diagnose small, non-cavitated initial caries lesions on radiographs. This presents an opportunity for the clinician and the patient to address these lesions non-invasively with Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus, which, along with improved oral hygiene and diet, can remineralize these lesions.
