Interproximal early carious lesion in a high caries risk patient

Before
After

Patient Presentation and examination:

Personal information and relevant history: 29-year-old female patient, with a personal history of frequent consumption of coffee with sugar and past dental history of multiple caries-affected teeth

Routine radiographic examination: Small radiolucencies on the distal surface of #12 and mesial surface of #13. (Figure 1), confirmed with AI.

Diagnosis: Based on the radiographic examination, the diagnoses were as follows:

#12 (distal): Early caries extending to the outer third of dentin (D1)

#13 (mesial): Early caries extending to the inner half of enamel (E2)

Treatment:

  • The lesions were treated with one application of Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus, followed by fluoride varnish.
  • Oral hygiene instructions were reinforced.

Follow-up: At the 6-month follow up, the following observations were made: (Figure 2)

#12: Reduction in the size of the lesion to E2

#13: Complete reduction in the size of the lesion to E0.

Take-away: Patients with caries experience and/or with sugar-rich diet are at a high risk of developing new carious lesions. Diagnosis of such lesions while they are still non-cavitated, made easier with the help if AI, can help clinicians provide patients the possibility of non-invasive treatment with Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus.
