Patient Presentation and examination:
- Personal information and dental history: 22-year-old female, with a history of poor oral hygiene maintenance
- Intraoral examination: A white discoloration observed in the cervical third of the labial surface of 21 along the gingival margin, which was visible both when the tooth was wet and dry. (Figure 1)
Diagnosis:
- 21: Initial carious lesion (ICDAS Score 2) on the labial surface
Treatment:
- The lesion was treated with one application of Curodont Repair in the same appointment.
- Curodont Protect was prescribed to be used twice a week at home at bedtime.
Follow-up: At the 1-month post-treatment follow-up, significant reduction in lesion size and appearance was observed, indicative of caries regression. (Figure 2) The patient remains under follow up.
Take-away: Early caries on smooth surfaces often appear as white discolorations in areas prone to plaque retention e.g.. along the gingival margin. These, especially when in an esthetically important zone, can be treated non-invasively with Curodont Repair in office. Treated early, these lesions may fade to a significant extent, as is evident from the present case.
