Interproximal initial caries treated with Curodont Repair and Curodont Protect

Before
After

This case is a part of a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the remineralization potential of Curodont Repair through before-and-after radiographs of initial interproximal lesions on posterior teeth in 219 children (age: 10-19 years), with a total of 405 lesions treated during this study. (Godenzi D et al. J Am Dent Assoc. 2023;154:885-896.e9)

Patient Presentation and examination:

  • Routine radiographic examination: A small radiolucent area observed on the mesial surface of 16. (Figure 1)
  • A subsequent intraoral scan, using KaVo DiagnoCam, revealed a dark area in the mesial marginal ridge area of 16

Diagnosis:

  • 16: Initial carious lesion extending to the inner half of enamel (E2) on the mesial surface

Treatment:

  • The lesions were treated with one application of Curodont Repair.
  • Curodont Protect was prescribed to be used once a week at home at the treated site.

Follow-up:

  • At the 5-month post-treatment follow-up, an x-ray and an intraoral scan revealed complete regression of the lesion to E0. (Figure 2)

Take-away: Very early stages of caries are often hard to diagnose on radiographs. Technologies like transillumination can help diagnose these lesions, which can then be treated with Curodont Repair immediately.
