Interproximal initial caries treated with Curodont Repair and Curodont Protect

Before
After

This case is a part of a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the remineralization potential of Curodont Repair through before-and-after radiographs of initial interproximal lesions on posterior teeth in 219 children (age: 10-19 years), with a total of 405 lesions treated during this study. (Godenzi D et al. J Am Dent Assoc. 2023;154:885-896.e9)

Patient Presentation and examination:

  • Routine radiographic examination (July 2017): A small radiolucent area observed on the distal surface of 15. (Figure 1)

Diagnosis:

  • 15: Initial carious lesion extending to the inner half of enamel (E2) on the distal surface

Treatment:

  • The lesion was treated with one application of Curodont Repair.
  • Curodont Protect was prescribed to be used once a week at home at the treated site.

Follow-up:

  • At the 16-month post-treatment follow-up (November 2018), complete regression of the lesion to E0 was noticed. (Figure 2)

Take-away: Interproximal initial carious lesions are a common occurrence.* Being asymptomatic, routine radiographs as part of regular oral hygiene recalls are good opportunities to detect these lesions and possibly treat in the same appointment non-invasively with Curodont Repair by caries arrest and regression through Guided Enamel Regeneration. This is supported by the at-home application of Curodont Protect, a remineralizing dental gel.
