Patient Presentation and examination:
- Personal information: 42-year-old male
- Intraoral examination with KaVo DiagnoCam: Dark triangular areas noticed on the distal surface of 14 and mesial surface of 15. (Figure 1)
Diagnosis: Based on patient symptoms, visual-tactile examination, and the transillumination findings:
- 14: Initial carious lesion extending to the outer half of enamel (E1) on the distal surface
- 15: Initial carious lesion extending to the inner half of enamel (E2) on the mesial surface
Treatment:
- The lesion was treated with one application of Curodont Repair.
- Oral hygiene instructions were reinforced.
Follow-up: At the 4-month post-treatment follow-up, the intraoral scan revealed regression in lesion sizes and depths on both 14 and 15. (Figure 2) The patient continues to be under follow up.
Take-away: Early caries, especially on the proximal surfaces, can often go undetected until cavitation, at which point, restorative treatment becomes necessary. Diagnosing these lesions at regular intervals, possibly with advanced aids, and treating them non-invasively and pro-actively with Curodont Repair helps prevent caries progression and enable enamel regeneration within the lesion.
