Post orthodontic early carious lesion, seen as a white spot lesion

Before
After

Patient Presentation and examination:

  • Personal information and dental history: 18-year-old male, with a history of recently completed fixed orthodontic treatment
  • Intraoral examination revealed multiple white irregular discolorations in the cervical thirds of the facial surfaces of the anterior teeth, especially prominent on 21. (Figure 1)

Diagnosis:

  • Early, non-cavitated caries (ICDAS scores 1 and 2) on maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth, appearing as white spot lesions. On 21, an ICDAS Score 2 carious lesion was diagnosed.

Treatment:

  • The lesions were treated with one application of Curodont Repair
  • Oral hygiene instructions were reinforced.

Follow-up: At the 2-month post-treatment follow-up, significant reduction in the size of the facial white spot lesion on 21 was observed. (Figure 2) The patient continues to be under follow up.

Take-away: Oral hygiene maintenance is often complicated during fixed orthodontic therapy, making initial caries, seen as white spot lesions, a common occurrence.* Curodont Repair can be used, with improved oral hygiene, to treat these lesions in a non-invasive manner to enable remineralization through Guided Enamel Regeneration.
